AMG GT 4-door Smashes Porsche and Alfa Romeo’s Nurburgring Records

AMG’s four-seater now the king of sedans after completing the Nurburgring in seven minutes.

AMG can add another trophy to the collection. AMG’s GT 4-door is now officially the fastest four-seater to circulate the famous Nurburgring Nordschleife. According the above video from the official AMG YouTube page, the super sedan’s time of 7:25.41 shaves off handful of seconds compared to Alfa Romeo’s 7:32 effort using the Giulia Quadrifoglio.

As most debates about “standard productions cars” go, this one is in some safe territory. AMG decided to forego the use of a safety cage and racing harness, instead slapping AMG Development Engineer Demian Schaffert in the driver’s seat using just a three-point seat belt.

AMG GT 4 door Nurburgring

Although the lap looks sure-footed and well planted the whole way through, there’s one interesting aspect to point out. The Nurburgring lap was done entirely without using the paddle shifters. That’s right, this record was set in full automatic mode, proving the computers in the car know exactly what to do at any given time. We assume this was done purely on purpose, as it was an AMG development driver at the helm.

After all, what better way to prove that a system works than by setting a record? As for the record, there could be time left on the table, too. The run was performed early in the morning, which is not so good for warming the track and providing grip for the tires in the corners, but is perfect for cold and dense air for the engine to make optimum power.

Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe

AMG’s accomplishment comes on the heels of their recent Formula 1 accomplishments, with Lewis Hamilton winning his 5th drivers title, and adding yet more points to the 2018 constructors championship race for the team. Energy is clearly behind the crew from Affalterbach. But where do they go from here? Will AMG be inclined to make a GT R version of their new fastest sedan and set the bar ever higher? Will that go against the whole reason for building the GT 4-door Coupe or will it solidify its existence alongside its two-door counterpart?
