300SEL AMG

AMG’s workshop in Germany got their hands on this 300SEL in the ’80s and the results are amazing.

AMG’s very beginnings involved a big V8 engine in a large sedan. The Red Pig took on the motorsport world by surprise and became a legend in its own right. That’s why we love seeing older AMG modified rides like this 300SEL 6.3.

This 300SEL left the factory in 1971, and stayed in its homeland of Germany for 13 years. During that time, it was fettled by AMG. Although mostly visual changes occurred (we’ll get to that), the interest lies under-hood. The M100 V8 is a larger capacity now, being bored out to the point that it necessitated new pistons. The cylinder heads are ported and polished to assist with moving that extra volume. Sadly it hasn’t been put on a dyno for official readings. Considering the Euro-spec of this motor had about 280 horsepower, an estimate of over 300 would not be out of line. Torque would be well over 430 lb-ft.

Visually, it is evident that most of the car’s brightwork is now gone. Replacing it is black trim, and shaved bumpers. AMG’s “Penta” wheels add to this 300SEL’s visual presence as something special. Inside, things become even more bespoke. The seats are delightfully period-correct blue velour Recaro seats with articulate bolsters. Matching that blue is an AMG style four-spoke steering wheel. Blue leather surrounds a black insert with “SILBERPFEIL” inscription denoting it as a “Silver Arrow.”

The condition of this SEL is what we’d describe as “driver’s” condition. There’s a bit of wear inside, and the paint could use a little TLC. That just means you can jump in and drive it without worrying about a new rock chip, however. This is a car meant to be driven anyway.

This 300SEL might only make a modest amount of horsepower, but that’s OK. The fact is, it still has just as much AMG prestige as the newest AMG GT. In fact, it may have even more prestige because the owner had to go out of their way to have AMG work their magic. Yes, AMG still has the infamous hand-built engines, but this 300SEL was truly built-to-order. You’d be hard pressed to find any other one like it.
