Interesting eBay Ad Uncovers Rarest AMG (Maybe)

AMGs aren’t a dime-a-dozen. They’re a low-volume, high-performance car (or SUV), and that’s part of the appeal. There’s been special editions over the years, but this oldĀ eBay ad sparked an inquiry: MBWorld members started wondering what is the rarest AMG 202 out there? It turns out the answer lies in a run of just seven examples. More about that later.

Anyhow, this C43 is claimed in the ad to have been a McLaren edition. It also claims the title of being an F1 safety car. Debatable on the Mclaren part, and hogwash on the Formula 1 safety-car part. The only 202 sedans that F1 used for safety cars were older C36s. Additionally when they did have the V8 motor, it was in a station wagon body. However, there was a connection between McLaren and Mercedes during this time. There may very well be a McLaren tweaked W202, but little more than a sticker on the dashboard indicates to me that this is one of them.

Curiosity about this matterĀ made for an interesting discovery by one of our members. In searching for smaller volume W202s, it was mentioned that there was a very small run of C55 AMGs. The W202 and S202 versions of the C55 had always remained rather mysterious with a total of only 59 built. 30 of those had the steering wheel on the left side, 29 of them had the steering wheel on the right, and 7 of them were station wagons. That means the S202 C55 AMG is quite possibly the rarest production AMG out there.
