Benzos on the Big Screen: Lost Highway (NSFW)

If you drive a big ‘ol Mercedes, you should be able to drive it however the hell you like, especially during a lovely jaunt in the country. Alas, a man’s peace at the wheel can be greatly affected by one terrible thing: Tailgaters. That is one thing we, and Robert Loggia, “cannot tolerate.”

Still, in David Lynch’s “Lost Highway,” Loggia’s reaction to such a horrendous act as tailgating may be a bit overboard, as the NSFW clip above shows. But when you drive a 1977 Mercedes-Benz 450 SEL 6.9 [W116], you play by your own rules.

In typical tough guy mode, Loggia plays mobster Mr. Eddy, who is actually one of the more sane people navigating through Lynch’s bizarre film about God knows what. Honestly, the plot, if there is one, is too bonkers to even try to sum up.

But it doesn’t matter whether or not you like movies that are strange simply for the sake of being strange, what matters is you enjoy the finest of German engineering, with horsepower to burn, and enough luxurious backseat legroom for two giant henchmen.

When Mr. Tailgater’s Ford Thunderbird gets a little too close, Mr. Eddy waves him on so as to go on enjoying his country ride at his own damn pace. But when Mr. Tailgater rolls by, flipping the thunderous bird, the henchmen know it’s time to buckle up. “This is where mechanical excellence, one-thousand-four-hundred horsepower, pays off.”

Yes, Mr. Eddy’s Benzo has been finely tuned. He punches it, and just like that he’s doing 160km, slamming Black Magic into the overmatched Ford, ramming Mr. Tailgater off the road. And that’s when the real driving lesson happens.

Honestly, if Mr. Eddy was a Driver’s Ed instructor, there’d probably be far less accidents.
