BMW Makes the Forbes List of 15 New Cars to Avoid

Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG 4MATIC vs BMW M6

The Ultimate Driving Machine just received a heavy blow from both J.D. Power and Forbes. The new BMW 7 Series made it onto the latter’s list of 15 New Cars to Avoid.

Honestly, that’s not very surprising. BMW, as of late, has focused its efforts not on its top tier of cars, but rather on its ever-growing portfolio of niche-segment vehicles for which, literally, no one’s been asking. The very opposite of what Mercedes has been doing.

Until recently.

Lately, Mercedes seems to think that BMW is going in the right direction, which is about as far from the truth as possible. Hopefully, seeing BMW on the above Forbes list will help convince Mercedes that more isn’t always better. However, that doesn’t seem to be a view the company has, especially given the launches of the CLA, GLA, and GLE models.

BMW has lost its edge because it’s spreading its form of luxury too thin across its range to meet profit margins. That’s a problem that could be remedied if it reduced the number of its car lines. That’s also the same problem that got GM and Chrysler into the financial mess they were in back in the early 2000s. The same could happen to Mercedes if the automaker isn’t careful.

Right now, Mercedes is riding high on the successful launch of almost all of its cars. Everything is new or set to debut in the near future. That freshness is truly going to help the brand. However, if Mercedes regards BMW as a blueprint for success, it might be at the top of Forbes’ list of Cars to Avoid next year.
