Building a 1000+ HP Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series for the Nürburgring

AMG GT Black Series

It already holds the production car lap record. Imagine what the AMG GT Black Series can do with a few hundred more horsepower.

The Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series is one of the most dominating front-engine, rear-wheel-drive vehicles in the world. A factory fresh copy set a new lap record for unmodified serial production vehicles at the Nürburgring. It put down a blistering time of 6:43.61 and that was on a slightly damp track. It is significantly faster than the previous top dog AMG GT, the GT R Pro. However, for some folks all this performance is still not quite enough. Even the AMG GT Black Series has some room for improvement.

Misha Charoudin recently posted a video on his YouTube channel of the first AMG GT Black Series to be modified. Lukas Domogalla of Opus Automotive (formally Renntech Europe) welcomes a Black Series with only 24 kilometers on the clock into his shop. We get a detailed overview of everything that makes the Black Series so special.

On top of that Domogalla gives us an idea as to what is instore for this super car. First up is making the car sound more like a super car. This is obvious from the moment the car first rolls into the shop. “It’s quite obvious right now already it’s way too silent for most of our customers.” Says Domogalla. Apparently, it is underpowered as well. The goal is to increase the horsepower from 720 to over 1,000.

Getting that power is going to take a bit of work. Domogalla lays out the plans for the car to Charoudin. “Stage one tune, bigger turbos are also on the shelf.” Says Domogalla. That makes sense, as that is the common path to big power in modern turbocharged cars. The power is impressive, but those sorts of numbers are going to require a step up in safety items. A set of sport bucket seats and a roll cage are also planned for this Black Series.

AMG GT Black Series Engine

What really makes the Black Series stand out is all the aero bits. The big wing out back is obvious but there is so much more going on. Pop the hood and you will find a couple of small shark fins to help guide the air into the engine. It is not very often you see a car with aero bits in the engine bay. The aero tricks continue underneath the car. Most of the underside is flat to aid aerodynamics, but there are also several flexible air curtains along the bottom.

Front Splitter

One of the best bits though has got to be the adjustable front splitter. In street form there is a noticeable front splitter on the car, however, that can be adjusted easily for track mode. The owner can just reach under the car, lift two levers, and slide the splitter out like opening a desk drawer. Once in place, you screw in a couple splitter support rods and you are good to go with a helping of extra downforce. Of course, no aero conversation can be complete without discussing the massive rear wing. The wing is adjustable so you can modify the angle of attack. Buy the car and you get a set of camber plates that you can use to adjust the wing accordingly.

Track map

One of the last of the cool details seen on this car is on the inside. The car comes with many of the most famous track layouts installed in the infotainment system. This of course includes the various Nürburgring track configurations. Although, once this car is modified to put out over 1,000 horsepower, you should be looking at nothing besides the rapidly changing scenery outside.

The AMG GT Black Series is a hell of machine. We can’t wait to see what a modified version can do on the Nürburgring track. What do you think the lap time of the modified car will be? Let us know your guesses in the MB World forums.
