Mercedes-Benz invited Chris Harris and former F1 driver David Coulthard to drive a 220 Sedan in the Nurburgring round of the Langstreckencup (Long Distance Cup), the world’s largest historic endurance racing series. Harris was so excited by the invitation that he bought a suit. Not a racing suit, mind you, but a poorly-fitting business suit. Ok…

While the 220 never served as a racecar, it was more of a rally/long-distance touring racer, MB built this car to race at the Nurburgring perhaps to show why it had never raced before. “Minis are coming past like Formula One cars…” an amused David Coulthard told Chris Harris. Just how slow is the fintail? It lapped the ‘Ring in about fourteen minutes. That. Is. Slow. In a class of three cars, Coulthard told Harris to expect third place.

This particular example features Dunlop track tires and an upgraded, modern suspension and produces an optimistic 140 bhp. That in a car that weighs about 1400 kg (~ 3080lbs). Coulthard calls the car “very entertaining, I had to giggle as I was going ’round.” He went onto lament that he only managed to get halfway through his email during his driving stint. Regardless, it looks like it was a fun time. Enjoy the video!
