Cloned Mercedes-AMG G63 6×6 Looks Like the Real Thing

Design students in Japan go to great lengths to make a Suzuki truck look like the Mercedes-Benz SUV.

Have you ever found yourself thinking, “Man I’d love to own a Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG 6×6”? OK, so maybe that’s a stupid question, considering that we imagine most here wouldn’t mind if you’re having a monstrous G-Wagen as their personal disposal. The problem, of course, is that owning one of the highly-coveted SUVs is typical reserved for those with a pretty big bank account, given that the price of the 6×6 Mercedes G63 can run $500,000 or more.

Well, it appears that a group of aspiring design students have found a way to get pass that rather large hurdle in the form of a custom kit that’ll craft a much cheaper SUV into a G-Wagen look-alike that comes in at $9,000, a report we first stumbled on in The Drive.

Yep, as it cool as it looks, that’s no G63 AMG, MB friends. That menacing looking SUV is actually a JA11 Jimney Kei Suzuki truck under the skin, made to look like the highly exclusive Mercedes-Benz G-Class.

The vehicle was designed by students at the Nihon Automotive Technology School (NATS) in Japan who clearly have a deep understating of the details that make the G63 AMG such a hot looking machine. The project grew out of a project aimed at creating a unique build to showcase at the Tokyo Auto Salon.

One of the first steps in building the Mercedes clone included chopping the rear of the Suzuki truck and increasing the vehicle’s frame length to fit on the extra rear axle. Then there are the other details like creating the grille, bumper and functional LED lights to really give it the look of an actual 6×6 G63 AMG. The bed of the Mercedes knock-off was custom made and finished off with a wood finish to make it look even more like the specialty G-Wagen.
