G-Class Production Tops 300,000 All-Time Units
Our favorite boxy off-road warrior shows no signs of slowing down after milestone production mark.
Want to purchase the 300,000th Mercedes Benz G-class? Too bad, you can’t. Mercedes has made a special version to commemorate 300,000 units, and that one specific car will be used by Mercedes for promotional purposes. Marking such a special occasion, the 300,000th G-class wears Designo Mauritius Blue Metallic, but it will feature far more than a special shade of paint.
Social media will see quite a lot of this G-glass, as Mercedes plans to spot light the off-roader. Wearing the graphics of “#Gventure300k” along each side, the 300,000th G-class also sports the Off-Road package.
Plump all-terrain tires surround 16-inch wheels, and other goodies like headlight guards and a utility roof rack are part of the package.
While some manufacturers can pump out 300,000 cars within a year, it’s taken Mercedes since 1979 to complete this number. Actually, Mercedes takes advantage of the resources of Magna Steyr in Austria to build the G-class. Stubbornly resisting evolution, the G-class hasn’t changed much, though interior appointments have been updated thoroughly compared to older models.
Some of the best updates to the G-class have been the addition of AMG engines, and also, portal axles as found in the 4×4 Squared. One thing has stayed the same though: It remains a body-on-frame chassis design. A redesign is on the horizon, however, and it’ll be quite an extensive one. Will the boxy icon soften its edges? We’ll have to wait until the end of this year for its debut.
