Japanese Tuner Transforms Suzuki Jimny into Amazing G-Wagen Tribute

Liberty Walk is known for its aggressive, bold widebody mods on Nissan and AMG coupes but their latest Suzuki mod is worth a look.

In the international auto press, few new vehicles have been as universally praised as the 2019 Mercedes G-Wagen. Well, except maybe the 2019 Suzuki Jimny. Aside from being two of the most capable SUVs on the planet, the two don’t have much in common. One is incredibly opulent and advanced, the other is too small to legally drive on U.S. roads and has about as many tech features as a hammer. Then there’s the price; you could (outside of North America) buy nearly eight Jimnys for the price of one G-Wagen.

But both body-on-frame SUVs are absolutely savage off-road, and their delightfully boxy looks give both of them serious old-school charm. At a quick glance, there’s even a resemblance between the two. This wasn’t lost on Japanese tuners Liberty Walk, who recently unveiled their body kit for the Jimny. Their inspiration? You guessed it, the mighty Merc.

Like Mini Me, but Mini G

Liberty Walk is known for taking wild cars and making them even more bonkers, so by their standards, the “Suzuki G mini” is surprisingly restrained. The Jimny’s grille has been replaced with a more Mercedes-esque double-bar unit. Its front bumpers have massive squared-off air intakes. The black multi-spoke rims, chromed spare tire cover, and taillights look exactly like Benz units, only smaller. Together, these black-and-white rock-crawlers they look like the perfect off-roading garage-mates.

There’s no word on how much the “Suzuki G mini” conversion costs, and it’s unlikely that few (if any) will leave Japan. Still, if we lived in a country where the Jimny was street-legal and had the funds, we’d absolutely get one outfitted to compliment a new G-Wagen. Use the Benz out for serious overlanding expeditions and for nights out in the finer parts of town. Save the Suzuki for rock-crawling, or to go places that would otherwise mess up the Mercedes’ expensive paint job.

It’s not often that an ersatz tribute can hold its own against the real deal. But Suzuki’s new rock-crawler, with the help of Liberty Walk, is a surprisingly great tribute to Mercedes’ off-roading benchmark. While we’d take a G-Wagen over a Suzuki any day of the week, we think this Japanese tribute is downright irresistible.
