Max Verstappen will race in a Mercedes-AMG GT3 at the Nurburgring.

Four-time F1 champion Max Verstappen will take on the ‘Green Hell’ with a Mercedes-AMG GT3 in the coming weeks.

At this point, you’re likely accustomed to watching record-breaking racing driver Max Verstappen climb out of an Oracle Red Bull Racing F1 car after a heated race. But Verstappen will trade his RB22 F1 car for a Mercedes-AMG GT3 in just a few weeks. If that wasn’t news enough, he’s taking it to the famed “Green Hell” for a grueling endurance race. That’s right, the four-time F1 champ is heading to Germany to tackle the 24 Hours of Nürburgring in May behind the wheel of a GT3 car with a three-pointed star up front.

In a promotional video, Red Bull skydiver Max Manow jumps into the cooling tower of a nuclear power plant to deliver Verstappen’s racing steering wheel. Moments later, the veteran F1 racing driver is on the radio saying, “The car is ready. See you at the 24 Hours of Nürburgring.” Not much left to interpretation there, eh? The Mercedes-AMG GT3 wears a familiar livery: the Red Bull red, blue, white, and yellow.

Verstappen to Race with Teammates in No. 3

“The Nürburgring-Nordschleife is a special place,” the four-time F1 champion said in a press release on the official Formula 1 landing page. “There’s no other track like it. The 24h Nurburgring is a race that’s been on my bucket list for a long time, so I’m really thrilled we can make it happen now,” he added.

“We’ve got a strong line-up with Dani [Juncadella], Jules [Gounon], and Lucas [Auer] and great support from Red Bull and Mercedes-AMG Motorsport,” Verstappen told the media team at Formula 1. Red Bull and Winward Racing will support him while he drives the AMG GT3. “Now it’s about putting in the right preparations before the events, so we can maximise everything in the races.”

Verstappen’s No. 3 car won’t be alone, either.  The No. 80 car will hit the track alongside the No. 3. Maro Engel, Maxime Martin, Fabian Schiller, and Luca Stolz will pilot that sister car. The race isn’t far off, either. Verstappen and his teammates will take on the Nürburgring, May 14th-17th.
