Mercedes-AMG C63 S Safety Car Sounds like It Belongs on Track

By -

Some folks don’t like the way new F1 cars sound, but this Mercedes safety car more than makes up for that.

Pace cars have always been a celebrated thing here in the states. And rarely have we ever been disappointed with the many performance models manufacturers supply for this not-terribly-important task. On the flip side of the coin, Formula 1 racing utilizes what they call safety cars. These vehicles actually serve an important purpose, dispatched on the track in the event of an accident or heavy rain. Since 1996, Mercedes has held the distinction of supplying F1’s safety car. Including the incredible sounding C63 S seen (and heard) in this video from the YouTube channel AutoTopNL.

If you close your eyes and just listen, you might just think that this uber Mercedes actually belongs on the track. It just sounds that darn good. Equipped with an iPE exhaust, its 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 certainly produces some intoxicating noises. The video description also claims that this particular car puts out 620 horsepower. That’s quite the jump from the stock car’s 503 ponies. But when you’ve got to be ready to jump out in front of the world’s fastest circuit racers, we suppose you need all the power you can get.

In fact, last season’s F1 safety car was a Mercedes AMG GT R, which seems like a solid choice. Regardless of the model, Mercedes equips these special rides with all sorts of fancy technology as well. That includes radio systems, integrated iPads, and in-car WLAN hotspots. All of this equipment works in tandem to ensure constant contact with race control.

Since the year 2000, former touring car racer Bernd Maylander is the lucky guy who gets to pilot these special rides. And apparently the job requires some level of skill. Maylander must keep the pace swift enough so the F1 cars behind him can maintain a certain tire and brake temperature.

Thus, we doubt we could be trusted with such an important job. As good as this Mercedes sounds, we’d just sit there and romp on it the whole time. Thus, this is a task best left to professionals with a bit more restraint than our inner five-year-old can provide!
