Mercedes-AMG G63 Driver Can’t ‘Bear’ to Separate from Vehicle

When does a Mercedes-AMG G-Wagen become even more eye-catching? When there’s a giant bear sitting behind the steering wheel.

We’ve seen a lot of different Mercedes-Benz G-Wagens. We’ve online window-shopped for the bare-bones diesel models from the 1980s. We marveled at the sight of the G 63 AMG 6X6. In 2017, we drove the G 550 on- and off-road. But we’ve never seen a G-Wagen like this. We’re willing to guess you haven’t either. You know…because there’s a freakin’ bear behind the wheel.

We really didn’t think it was possible, but someone found a way to make Mercedes-Benz’s most iconic SUV even more distinctive. With its upright body panels and dozens of right angles, it’s immediately recognizable. Nothing else out on the road looks like the G-Class. Perhaps that’s why so many celebrities are often spotted driving “regular” (is there such a thing?) and AMG G-Wagens. The person who did the unimaginable is Khizri Zapirov, aka khiza_13 on Instagram. Of course, he had a little help from a trained bear friend of his named Mishanya. Together, the two of them put on a charming and unusual skit.

Не угомонённый у меня Мишаня всегда за руль рвётся😂

It opens in Moscow with Zapirov and a young lady walking toward something that clearly upsets Zapirov. You can tell by the aggressive stance he takes. There’s someone behind the wheel of his G 63 that shouldn’t be there. It’s not a carjacker, though. It’s Mishanya. Forget food scraps – Mishanya wants to take the G-Wagen off-road to show her bear friends she’s made it.

Mishanya should’ve hit the road when she had the chance. Zapirov opens the driver’s door to the G-Wagen, making it clear to Mishanya that the jig is up. Mishanya bellows loudly, but obeys and walks away. It doesn’t matter which species you are – being kicked out of a G-Class has got to be upsetting.

Mishanya doesn’t go very far. After Zapirov and his lady friend get in the front seats, she ends up sitting a few feet away from them. She claps her giant front paws together as Zapirov watches out of the G 63’s driver’s window.

Perhaps that’s bear speak for “Please let me go with you.” It must mean something like that because Zapirov seems to have a change of heart. He gets out of the G-Class, opens one of the rear doors, and gently guides Mishanya onto a back seat. After making sure Mishanya won’t get pinched or hit by the door, Zapirov shuts it and gets behind the wheel again. It all seems to work out for the better. This time around, Mishanya gets to be escorted around Moscow and feel the breeze on her face instead of have to watch her speed or the G’s gas gauge. Yogi may be smarter than the average bear, but Mishanya topped him. She’s more baller than the average human.

Derek Shiekhi's father raised him on cars. As a boy, Derek accompanied his dad as he bought classics such as post-WWII GM trucks and early Ford Mustang convertibles.

After loving cars for years and getting a bachelor's degree in Business Management, Derek decided to get an associate degree in journalism. His networking put him in contact with the editor of the Austin-American Statesman newspaper, who hired him to write freelance about automotive culture and events in Austin, Texas in 2013. One particular story led to him getting a certificate for learning the foundations of road racing.

While watching TV with his parents one fateful evening, he saw a commercial that changed his life. In it, Jeep touted the Wrangler as the Texas Auto Writers Association's "SUV of Texas." Derek knew he had to join the organization if he was going to advance as an automotive writer. He joined the Texas Auto Writers Association (TAWA) in 2014 and was fortunate to meet several nice people who connected him to the representatives of several automakers and the people who could give him access to press vehicles (the first one he ever got the keys to was a Lexus LX 570). He's now a regular at TAWA's two main events: the Texas Auto Roundup in the spring and the Texas Truck Rodeo in the fall.

Over the past several years, Derek has learned how to drive off-road in various four-wheel-drive SUVs (he even camped out for two nights in a Land Rover), and driven around various tracks in hot hatches, muscle cars, and exotics. Several of his pieces, including his article about the 2015 Ford F-150 being crowned TAWA's 2014 "Truck of Texas" and his review of the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider, have won awards in TAWA's annual Excellence in Craft Competition. Last year, his JK Forum profile of Wagonmaster, a business that restores Jeep Wagoneers, won prizes in TAWA’s signature writing contest and its pickup- and SUV-focused Texas Truck Invitational.

In addition to writing for a variety of Internet Brands sites, including JK Forum, H-D Forums, The Mustang Source, Mustang Forums, LS1Tech, HondaTech, Jaguar Forums, YotaTech, and Ford Truck Enthusiasts. Derek also started There Will Be Cars on Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube.
