Mercedes-AMG G63: Afflerbach’s Best Vehicle Yet?

By -

The Straight Pipes thinks the new G63 is ultra-fast, luxurious and excellent. But does that make this SUV the best AMG can offer?

There’s no question the new G-Class is leaps and bounds an improved product over its predecessor. With an all-new platform and updated tech, it’s also more capable than ever. Buyers can even opt for the matching boat if you’re so inclined. Basically, there’s really not many compromises with the G-Class or the AMG G63.

But perhaps there is reason to take G-Class love one step further. Is it the absolute best AMG money can buy? That’s the question pondered by Yuri Tereshyn and Jakub Wrobel of The Straight Pipes, in a recent video posted to YouTube. They got some extended time behind the wheel of the 2020 G63 and loved nearly everything about it.

All of the Above

Like all other AMG models, the 2020 G63 is an absolute rocket. That’s immediately apparent when Wrobel stomps on the gas. Even without launch control, their expressions clearly portray two people who have trouble comprehending the G63’s quickness before their brains switch to pure enjoyment. Additionally, the exhaust note sounds incredible. “This compared to the rest of the AMG lineup, how does this sound?” asks Tereshyn. “Beefier! Just way deeper and beefier!” replies Wrobel. Mercedes developed a more throaty sound that clearly separates the G63 from everything else. It’s amazing.

Speaking of amazing, the G63 can be as wild or as tame as you want, depending on drive mode. It exists as a monster if desired. Or it can behave in a more civilized manner. “But if you keep it in comfort, like say you weren’t a very fast driver, but you wanted to buy the most expensive one, you’d be fine,” says Tereshyn. Essentially, anyone can buy the G63 and not worry about being shortchanged. Everyday driving and outright performance coexist hand-in-hand.

G63 Interior Strengths and Weaknesses

In addition to its on-road behavior, the G63 can back up its looks and AMG prowess with a great interior. The guys weren’t too thrilled with the black carbon fiber because they felt it looked a bit too plain. The silver lining is all the available options buyers have if they want something else. They also liked the infotainment system. “Which is the old style one that does not have a track pad,” says Tereshyn. “That’s right. This also doesn’t have Hey Mercedes ’cause it’s all kind of a generation back,” replies Wrobel. “It’s the sweet spot that we like,” quips Tereshyn. Despite not being at the technological cutting edge, the G63 offers the best of the Mercedes infotainment experience and also has Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Not bad at all!

There was one G63 aspect that the duo didn’t like. The seats almost literally rubbed them the wrong way. “I actually find them like way too bolstered. I had to turn down the bolsters,” says Wrobel. Additionally, the guys weren’t too impressed by the dynamic bolsters. “At first when I started driving these Mercedes I was like ‘yeah this is cool,’ now I just turn it off,” says Wrobel. Seat comfort is highly subjective. Fortunately, the dudes didn’t find the seats uncomfortable. Overall, the G63 remains an incredible SUV that will turns heads even ten years from now. Make sure you watch the video to check out their additional impressions of the G63. It just might be the best and most versatile G63 ever.
