Mercedes-AMG G65 Suffers ECU Recall For ‘Being Too Fast’

Mercedes-AMG G65 recall

V12 Mercedes-AMG G65 accelerates way too quickly while in reverse gear, causing safety issues.

AMG might have said they were slowly phasing away V12 models, but one obvious choice still remains: the G65 AMG. For 20 owners of AMG’s most in-your-face ride, they have a recall to contend with. While some might consider it a safety recall, we find it a bit unusual and humorous. In short, the G65 is too fast in reverse. It’s fast in many other ways as well, but we digress.

According to a Road & Track report, which seems unusually critical of the big Benz, the AMG is capable of exceeding 16 mph in reverse. That’s a simple software issue that can easily be addressed by your local dealer.

Since most people pop a vehicle into reverse and ride the brakes anyway, there’s not much of a sense of urgency to rush to the dealer to get it fixed, but the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration urges you to do so. And instead of filling us in on the juicy details on just how fast it could actually go in reverse to play a game of numbers among friends, we’re only told that it could exceed a measly 16 miles per hour. Hardly anything to cause a fuss.

Considering the production numbers of the G65, the 20 trucks being recalled is an exceptionally low number affected.

With crossover SUVs and CUVs taking over most showrooms, “they don’t build them like they used to” is a mantra that leads the G-Wagen to have an appeal like no other rig on the market. Despite the irreverence towards the Mercedes-AMG G65, we’d argue that the 4×4 Squared is the more outrageous version of the G-wagon. Still, AMG decided that a V12 could fit in the front, and we’d argue that engine makes it even better. Long live the G-Wagen.
