GT steals the thunder from Alfa Romeo’s Giulia Quadrifoglio.

Are you ready to drive what may be the second-fastest sedan to tackle the famed Nürburgring? Then hold onto your butts, because the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door is that car—once Mercedes decides to lend clarity, that is.

Motor1 editor Jeff Perez caught wind of this achievement from an interview with Automobile and Mercedes-AMG CEO Tobias Moers. Moers casually mentioned the recent run around the ‘Ring while explaining the need to bring the GT 4-Door to the AMG lineup in order to best the Porsche Panamera, a car which has stolen away a number of E43, E63 and C63 customers in recent memory.

“Without disturbing the Mercedes portfolio, we had to add a four-door sports car to our segment. And that car is capable of doing everything. Everyday driving, lapping the Nürburgring in 7 minutes, 30 something … which is really fast,” Moers said.

How fast is that “something” figure? The current titleholder is the Jaguar XE SV Project 8, which whipped through the “Green Hell” at seven minutes and 21 seconds. Meanwhile, the current silver medalist on the podium is Alfa Romeo’s Giulia Quadrifoglio at seven minutes and 32 seconds. The Mercedes-AMG GT 4-door is no slouch at 7:30, thanks to the 630 horses escaping from the four-liter, twin-turbo V8 through AMG’s take on the 4MATIC all-wheel drive system, with standard rear-axle steering and e-diff on board.

Of course, officials at Affalterbach aren’t prone to bragging about their latest and greatest demolishing the competition on the ‘Ring (that’s what Top Gear, endurance races and showrooms are for, after all). But perhaps, just this once, they’ll pull a Jeremy Clarkson and announce the full lap time in dramatic fashion, perhaps in an ad on TV or a billboard.’

Regardless of what happens, you will have to wait to drive the German automaker’s latest doorslammer, as the AMG GT 4-Door goes on sale in early 2019.
