YouTubers at Autocar Pit AMG GT C Against Porsche Carrera T

While they don’t grab headlines, middle trim level sports coupes such as the AMG GT C and Carrera T are hidden gems.

AMG’s attempt at stealing some sales from Porsche via the AMG GT has been a noble effort. Allowing the GT to mature into a sleek and svelte grand touring car has meant that Mercedes could design a car that’s great on the road, and will be competent on track, as well. A needed change compare to the brutish character of the SLS. Dan Prosser from AutoCar agrees, and goes even further to discover that the middle-level models, such as the GT C for Mercedes and the Carrera T from Porsche might be the ultimate versions of those cars.

“Lets start in the bigger, noisier, faster car,” Prosser declares of the Mercedes. With the GT S one model below, and the GT R one model higher, the GT C takes on the best of the R without the harsh compromises.

It shares the wider track of the R, which also leads it to have superior, more predictable handling. More importantly, Prosser points out an important aspect of the GT, saying that Mercedes has “come along with a new car in a very congested sector of the market and built something individual and distinctive.” In all, this leads Prosser to conclude that the GT C is easily the best model of the GT line to get for pure driving pleasure. But how does it compare with its legendary German rival?

There’s no doubt that Porsche’s ownership base is fanatical about the sensations of driving. Perhaps that’s why the 911 has reluctantly been dragged along into the world of things like turbocharging and electric power steering. But that doesn’t mean it’s not innovative, as proven by the Carrera T, replete with a number of weight savings and performance features for diving head-first into spirited driving. Equipped with a manual transmission, the 911 is much more involving than the GT, though “it feels quite normal compared to the theater of an Audi R8 or AMG GT,” according to Prosser. He also notes it’s not the best middle ground in the 911 lineup, but that doesn’t stop him from enjoying it.
