Mercedes-Benz Redefines What It Means to Be Cool in This Year’s Super Bowl Spot

Whether or not you’re a football fan, the Super Bowl is a great time to watch TV. Advertisers usually roll out their very best campaigns during the big game, spending millions of dollars to produce and air commercials that occasionally border on art. Some even have the feel of a short film.

Mercedes-Benz had one of the best ads of the game, and while it wasn’t a groundbreaking piece of short-form cinema, it did utilize nostalgia — and well-placed cinematic references — to get its message across.

Was Mercedes-AMG GT Roadster the Super Bowl MVP?

“Cool” means different things to different people, but if you looked up the definition in the dictionary, there’s more than likely a picture of Peter Fonda from Easy Rider, astride his famous “Captain America” chopper. So what does all of this have to do with Mercedes?

This year’s Mercedes Super Bowl ad starts out in a biker bar. Every aging biker stereotype’s represented — a jukebox (with the only option, naturally, being Steppenwolf’s “Born to be Wild”), a shrine to the aforementioned Easy Rider, a bar fight, and plenty of beer to go around. Suddenly, a biker swings the door open to let the other patrons know he’s blocked in.

The bikers rush out to see a gorgeous new Mercedes-AMG GT Roadster blocking their rides in… and who walks up but Peter Fonda himself. “Nice rides,” he proclaims, as he he rides off into the sunset. The intention is clear: while it may be faster, more comfortable, and far more expensive than a Harley chopper, Mercedes hopes you’ll find their new roadster just as iconic.
