Mercedes AMG GT Gearbox Is Way Cheaper than the Ford GT’s

Despite having identical transmissions, Ford wants $32,324 compared to  AMG’s $14,940.

Anybody who follows the car world knows all about Ford’s much-ballyhooed GT. Mostly because the latest iteration of their legendary, Le Mans-winning GT40 packs V6 power instead of the traditional V8. But few people ever talk about the car’s transmission – Getrag’s 7-speed 7DCL750 dual-clutch piece. Which, it so happens, is the same gearbox used in the Mercedes AMG GT. That isn’t too surprising a fact, of course. But what is surprising is how much more it costs you in the Ford GT.

According to a recent Road & Track report, buyers of the Ford supercar are effectively paying double the price that Mercedes-AMG GT buyers pay for the same exact transmission. More specifically, Mercedes charges $14,940 for the gearbox alone. Ford, on the other hand, wants $32,324. And that, folks, is pretty surprising. Who would have ever thought that a Mercedes could be considered a bargain compared to a Ford? These are strange days, indeed.

Of course, these aren’t the only two cars that used this specific gearbox. It’s also sold in the Ferrari 458 and California, and AMG SLS. Each version uses its own specific parts, though the housings are similar. But in this case, the Mercedes AMG GT and Ford GT employ the same exact gear ratios in every single gear, including the final drive number.

Common sense would tell you that since Ford buys a lot more transmissions from Gertrag than Mercedes, it would also be able to get them cheaper. But since the GT is being built in extremely limited numbers, perhaps Ford has no interest in passing along those savings. Regardless, this little tidbit of info is incredibly interesting. And it makes your interest in a new Mercedes AMG GT easier to explain to your significant other, too.
