AMG Teams Score Crucial Wins at Championship Race in Atlanta

Debuting in the 2018 IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge, the AMG GT4 flaunts its brute force at Road Atlanta race track.

A few months ago, Mercedes-AMG brought its winning ways to the FIA GT4 class with the introduction of the GT-R-based AMG GT4 to the IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge, a car first previewed at the 2017 24 Hours of Spa in Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium.

Since then, the GT4 has captured several wins, including the manufacturers’ vice-championship. Mercedes-AMG recently captured the action of the season finale at Road Atlanta race track, featuring Continental teams’ and drivers’ champions, Team TGM, and Winward Racing/HTP Motorsport.

“What an unbelievable year it’s been,” said Team TGM co-driver Hugh Plumb. “We’ve had three wins and a podium, so for us to be able to seal this 2018 championship is really unbelievable.

“Road Atlanta [is] one of my favorite tracks to come to,” adds co-driver Owen Trinkler. “The Mercedes-AMG GT4 handles this 12-turn course really well.”

“So, we have a two-hour race in the Continental SportsCar Challenge,” said Winward Racing co-driver Indy Dontje. “It’s our first time at Road Atlanta. Every lap is enjoyable in the Mercedes-AMG GT4.” Along with co-driver Bryce Ward, his team’s aim is to “end up on the podium” after two hours of “hard racing” through the ups, downs, and turns of the road course.

In the end, Team TGM finished 11th while Winward Racing took home third, the highest-placing Mercedes-AMG GT4 to land on the podium of Road Atlanta.

“I feel great. I had a lot of fun,” said Dontje. “It was really difficult. I had to run-off in the gravel band, but in the end, P3 is [a] great, great feeling. To end the season like this is– I think we really had a good performance this season.”

We can’t wait to see the Mercedes-AMG GT4 roar again, this time in the re-christened Michelin Pilot Challenge. We just need to get through Thanksgiving and Christmas first.
