Mercedes-Benz To Partner With Chinese Company for Abu Dhabi Robotaxis
Mercedes-Benz, Momenta, and Lumo enter into a partnership to put luxury robotaxis in the UAE.
Mercedes-Benz, Chinese software company Momenta Global Ltd., and UAE-based Lumo Mobility are partnering up to launch luxury robotaxis on the streets of Abu Dhabi. According to Mercedes-Benz, the cars will ride on the new S-Class platform. The self-driving cabs will reportedly use Level 4 autonomous driving suites to ferry passengers around the United Arab Emirates capital.
It’s the first venture the three-pointed star has made into the realm of robotaxis, following companies like Waymo and Cruise, which already operate autonomous cabs in major cities. It isn’t, however, the first time Momenta has partnered with a German luxury automaker. BMW tapped the Chinese technology company to supply the group with self-driving systems. For now, interested riders will have to journey to Abu Dhabi for a ride in one of the MB.OS-equipped Level 4 self-driving taxis.
‘The highest standards of engineering and autonomous intelligence’
Joerg Burzer, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Mercedes-Benz Auto Group, sees the autonomous S-Class taxis as a milestone for the company. “With a robotaxi S-Class, we raise the bar for automated mobility — always combining safety and comfort to set new standards for the industry and intelligent transportation worldwide. All our activities in that field underline Mercedes-Benz’s pioneering role in autonomous driving.”
It’s not just Mercedes-Benz’s CTO, either. H.E. Faisal Abdulaziz Al Bannai, the Advisor to the UAE President for Strategic Research and Advanced Technology Affairs and Secretary General of ATRC, had this to say on the matter. “This partnership between Mercedes, Momenta, and Lumo reflects the highest standards of engineering and autonomous intelligence.”
“Bringing these strengths together here in the UAE is no coincidence,” he added. The nation offers the ideal environment to test, refine, and showcase the future of mobility. Nowhere else in the world provides the same clarity of vision, speed of execution, and commitment to innovation.”
