When Daimler and Renault-Nissan announced a cooperation agreement back in April this year, people who cared knew that it was a matter of time before some Mercedes-Benz or AMG power plants would make their way to Nissan vehicles–at least, the higher end ones. Now, recent reports have it that those engines could likely make their way to the just-launched IPL line, which stands for Infiniti Performance Line.

One rumor that’s circulating is that the range of the Infiniti G
coupe could receive something like the 3.5L twin-turbo V6 from
Mercedes-Benz. There are also reports that the 6.2L V8 from performance
arm AMG could also be headed for these high-performance IPL models,
particularly an IPL trim for the Infiniti M. If ever some Infiniti
vehicles would really receive AMG engines, it is highly likely that they
will come with a badge that says “Powered by AMG.”

It’s interesting to see how these supposed Benz- or AMG-toting IPL
units will be competing on the market, what with similarly-placed models
like the Mercedes-Benz AMG E63. Other rivals for the new IPL line
include the 5-Series from BMW and the Jaguar XFR.

It’s still too early to say how big the impact of the IPL line will
be, and if Benz and AMG really have something in store for it in the
future. Stay tuned for more developments.
