Mercedes Considering Electric Turbocharging

While we all bemoan the slow death of the naturally aspirated engine, and indeed we should, especially the wondrous 6.2L V8 from Mercedes, this new turbocharged era will be good for enthusiasts. And we all just need to get on board. That said, according to a new report, we may start to see a new form of electric turbocharging hit the mass market sooner rather than later.

While the technology has been around for quite some time, it’s only in the last few years that auto manufacturers have been putting this tech in their cars. VAG already has it on a few production cars, as well as the upcoming Bugatti Chiron. Now, however, Mercedes AMG’s head of compact car development, Steffen Jastrow, has been making some bold statements about where AMG could be heading.

“Of course we need more power for the next generation of cars, but electrification does not mean we have to use an electric drivetrain.” Jastrow told Auto Express. “They have to be faster and e-turbos are an option.”

It’s interesting to hear such statements coming out of AMG, but not altogether unexpected. Turbocharging cars is going to be the wave of performance car future. It helps with gas mileage, reduces exhaust emissions, and allows for a ton of horsepower and grunt out of relatively small engines.

But what do you guys think of these statements? Are you looking forward to electric turbocharging?
