Is Mercedes Considering a New Convertible SUV?

Over the last few months, Mercedes has focused a lot of attention on their burgeoning SUV lineup. With the whole naming overhaul and the introduction of all the new lineup of SUVs, the three-pointed star is on an SUV roll. But since the popularity of SUVs has increased tenfold in the past few years, it has the company asking “what’s next?” And according to Wolf-Dieter Kurz, the company’s sport-ute and sports car chief, that something might be a convertible SUV.

While much of the secretive project is still, well, a secret, Kurz recently stated that “we will find a market… the convertible is a very slim niche in terms of the SUV portfolio.”

While the company could very easily retrofit the G-Wagen with a drop-top, since it had one for almost 35 years, the company is apparently looking more into building its smaller SUV lineup with a convertible option. Something more in tune with the Murano Cross Cabriolet, or the upcoming Evoque convertible.

But what do you all think, should Mercedes build another convertible SUV? Or should they learn from the failure that is the Cross Cab and just let sleeping dogs lie?
