GLA-Class Is More Than a Taller A-Class

Mat Watson of CarWow Offers His Thoughts on the Mercedes-Benz GLA

In the above review for CarWow, Mat Watson takes us up, over, around, and through the details that make the GLA-Class special.

If you’re looking for a small SUV, how does this one hold up against competition from BMW’s X1 and Audi’s Q3? Is there enough posh for the dosh? Considering that Mercedes’ smallest SUV rides on a 2-inch-higher version of their smallest hatchback’s platform, it would seem that the posh isn’t bad. But perhaps nothing to write home about. While we don’t get the A-Class here in the States, the GLA starts at $32,850 USD — marginally less than the X1’s $33,100, but more than the Q3’s $31,800. So is the GLA worth it?

Comparisons to the A-Class may fall a bit on deaf ears here. But still, the GLA does feature a larger rear-hatch area and more head and leg room for rear-seat passengers than its hatchback cousin. Moving into the front seat, Mat laments the GLA’s cheap-appearing satellite navigation system. And we can’t help but agree with him on this one. But the car does score well in comfort. Mat particularly likes being able to put big water bottles in the doors and accessories in the little cubbies dotted around the cabin.

Is it perfect? Perhaps not. Is it a decently-designed, small-yet-tall people carrier, with standard all-wheel drive? Absolutely. Like Mat, we do wish the steering had a bit more feel through the wheel, though.

It’s fun to watch Mat give his opinions on such a car, as he does so with unique mannerisms and a colloquial jolliness that reviewers often lack. He just seems like your best friend who is excited to show you all of the neat (and not so neat) things about the car. If you’re considering a GLA for your next Mercedes-Benz, give this short video a watch.
