Mercedes Owner Shares Tips for Repairing Hood Ornament

A three-star Mercedes-Benz hood ornament is still a highly-coveted jewel.

If you own an earlier model Mercedes-Benz, it likely it could be one of the most prized parts of your car.

Heck, if you grew up as a teen during the late eighties, this very well might be one of the most coveted features of a Mercedes, even if you’ve never owned a ‘Benz.

As you’ve probably now realized, we’re not talking about what sits under the hood of those beloved MBs. Nope, this story is centered on the three-point Mercedes star that sits on top of the hood of some older MB vehicles. And those hood ornaments were once a highly popular item with thieves who prized the emblems as medallions.

But sometimes thieves aren’t the ones to blame. In a recent Jalopnik report, Mercedes-Benz owner Kristen Lee details her hood ornament replacement experience, after accidentally snapping her ‘Benz’s star off while clearing snow from the early-2000s model. Lee details how fixing the star was an absolute necessity.

“I suppose I could have easily just left the hood the way it was. It wasn’t totally obvious that something was amiss. But, as any obsessive person knows, when something is off it bugs the s*** out of you. Something needed to be done. Plus, the hood ornament helped me place the front of the car. I was basically flying blind without it,” said Lee.

That said, we imagine there might be a few Mercedes owners here who could use Lee’s step-by-step outline for repairing the hood ornament as inspiration for their own three-star repair project that they’ve been putting on hold.

Cost? Roughly $30 bucks for the part, some patience, and a little sweat. But as Lee points out, it definitely beats the cost of having a dealership do the repair.
