Mercedes Touts 435 Mile Range for Upcoming All-electric EQS

EQS range

Notes from a recent Daimler shareholder meeting suggest the EQS could have an range which puts other EV’s to shame.

We knew it wouldn’t take long for Mercedes to take on the EV market and dominate, and the EQS is shaping up to do just that. In a piece published by Robb Report, Daimler CEO Ola Källenius is reported to have claimed the following: “The EQS will set standards. More than [435 miles] of driving range according to WLTP. With the EQS, the way we think about cars is changing. It is the first fully electric luxury sedan from Mercedes-Benz based on an all-electric architecture. This opens up entirely new possibilities—from the position of the batteries to the car’s design.

The acronym WLTP is the important part of that statement. It stands for Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure. Worldwide, it seems, doesn’t include the US, as the only other long-range EV on the market is the Tesla model S, and it doesn’t have a WLTP rating. Still, we can’t imagine WLTP and EPA ratings are that different, although Car and Driver has found numerous oddities that fluff WLTP numbers.

EQS range

We all know that climate and other factors can affect range. So for those running air conditioning, or running heater and heated seats, as they say, your mileage may vary. However, this does put the EQS at – and in some cases above – the typical range of some cars. At the very least, it reduces the range-anxiety from some EVs which have only 100 or so miles between charges. With the EQS, an average commute can be completed a number of times before needing to be plugged back in for some juice. We fell most drivers will stay in the habit of charging each night.

So while we might not get the full 435 miles out of an EQS under perfectly ideal conditions, it comes awfully close to the Tesla’s 400 miles. And one thing is for sure, quality control at Mercedes will surpass Tesla by a long margin. Oddly enough, Tesla uses Mercedes sourced switchgear, but in terms of panel gaps, material quality and dealer support, Mercedes stands out by a long margin.
