Mercedes Vision EQXX: The EV You Only Charge Twice a Month

By -

EQXX

Mercedes recently dropped a teaser image of their Vision EQXX. It has a slippery shape and 621-mile range.

The average American drives about 13,500 miles per year. The new Mercedes Vision EQXX will reportedly come with a 621-mile range on a single charge. That means you will only have to charge the EQXX about 22 times per year or less than twice a month.

Mercedes knows that driving range is a major hurdle to folks looking to move from combustion to electric vehicles. The EQXX will use highly efficient batteries that will go a long way to ease these concerns.

Like all electric cars the batteries are the key. Mercedes plans to use power dense batteries that are smaller but more efficient than what is seen today. This would be a significant leap forward. Making such a leap is not easy so they are bringing in the big guns to help.

Mercedes has tapped into the brilliant folks that work in their Formula 1 powertrain division. If anyone can figure this out it would be this team. The EQXX depends on it but so do a lot of other models. Mercedes is all in on electric vehicles and they must advance the technology forward if they want to compete.

Electric Drive

As far as the EQXX goes, we don’t have much to go on right now. The car will be revealed sometime in 2022. But what we do know is that the car looks pretty sexy in the dark. Lowering the drag coefficient is also important for EV range. You can see even in the dark and shadowy image that the EQXX looks like a slippery car.

It also seems to have a voluptuous set of hips on it. Most interesting though is what appears to be NACA ducts on something similar in the hood. We are not sure what they are for in this application or if they will make it to production. But there is no doubt that they make the concept look a bit racier.

Although the EQXX appears to be racy it does not seem to aim at track days and setting the best lap time. The vehicle teased here seems to be fairly large. This looks to be more of a Tesla Model S fighter than anything else.

If it can reach its 621-mile range target it will be able to travel about 50 percent further on a single charge than any Model S on sale today. That is obviously a major advantage, and not just in the EQXX. Any battery break throughs made in developing this concept will be applied to future Mercedes EVs.

If Mercedes is able to pull off this feat and offer an electric car with this kind of range, would that alleviate your range anxiety? Would it be enough to embrace electric cars even if you don’t today? Hopefully it is because soon you will not have many non-EV choices to choose from.

This is the path forward. And what better company to lead us into the future than Mercedes? In January 1886, Carl Benz applied for a patent for his “vehicle powered by a gas engine.” Now one hundred and thirty-five years later his company seems poised to re-invent vehicles powered by an electric motor.
