Mostly Stock G63 AMG Takes On Moab And Performs Admirably

Moab and its obstacles are true tests of machine capability. And despite low profile tires, the G63 AMG holds its own.

If you’re like most of us and enjoy Mercedes for being classy, well engineered vehicles, then you likely take good care of your car. Cody Detwiler, known for his YouTube Channel WhistlinDiesel doesn’t particularly fall into that category. In fact, he’s most known for his total disregard for mechanical sympathy. So you can only imagine what he’d do with a G63 at Moab.

Testing a G63 AMG on its own isn’t a very good litmus test. You need some machinery to compare it against. Dave Sparks, host of this channel that features Detwiler’s ride, has his own heavily modified Ford Diesel rock crawler truck. That truck is the extreme end of things, and a trusty and indestructible Toyota pickup is on the more humble end.

Well, as it turns out, the Toyota couldn’t match the G63 on the very first obstacle. So the bar is now set quite high for the G-wagon. Hell’s Gate is a deep crevice with a steep incline. Any vehicle that dares to tackle it essentially uses the sidewall of the tire for grip. One slip up, and the vehicle will land on its side. Given the lack of mechanical sympathy from Detwiler, that exact thing happened. RIP to that A-pillar. But amazingly, the G63 did make it down, and up the pass. Pretty impressive, given it is essentially stock apart from mud tires with a horrible-for-off-roading low profile design.

Despite the setback of a tip-over, Detwiler wanted a re-do. So he approached the incline with more speed. This popped a tire. And the G63 still made it up. A feat it repeated a second time. So it apparently can make it up mountain passes with a flat tire that other off-roaders can’t even do with fully inflated mudders.

So the G63 impresses so far, but the “Devil’s Hot Tub” is one last obstacle. It’s a steep, narrow, water-filled basin. The rock crawler could barely get itself out. And the AMG met its match here. Already hurting from only three good tires, it snapped an axle. And that was the end of a very thorough and rough and mighty impressive test of the G-wagon’s off road prowess. It won’t surprise us if we see the G-wagon conquering ever more terrain in the future though.
