New AMG on the Horizon As Mercedes Patents 'E 73' Name

M5 CS should be on notice, as AMG has now patented the E 73 name, giving the potential to have nearly 800 horsepower.

Mercedes and AMG are going to have a very healthy and happy relationship with electricity. Most symbolically with the AMG ONE. More practically with the EQS AMG. And perhaps, more promptly with the E 73 AMG.

We say that because CarBuzz uncovered a Daimler AG filed patent to trademark for the specific term “E 73.” While we already know about the GT 73, this is the first time we have seen the proposal to use that hybrid power unit in anything other than the 4-door GT.

The real significance is that this model will be available in the E-class at all. The “73” terminology can be thought of as essentially equal to AMG’s former V12 monsters. Since there wasn’t a V12 ever offered in the E-class before, this equivalent power will make the E 73 an absolute road missile. Power will be equivalent of V12 engines, with 800 horsepower rumored to be the number according to Motor1. This gives AMG two range-topping sedans, and a third S-class variant wouldn’t be out of the question either.

Seeing as the E-class and BMW’s 5 series have been in a closely fought battle for eons, the E 73 represents a game changing move. As it sits, BMW’s highest performing M5 is the CS version. It makes a stout 627 horsepower. But that’s 170 horsepower off from what the E 73 could make. Additionally, the electric motors in the E 73 would give it remarkable slow-speed torque to thrust it away from apexes. And it’ll make BMW’s 553 lb/ft of torque look like a squeak in comparison.

While electric and electrified cars become a beast of burden on track, we already understand AMG is making sure the GT 73 is a stout performer on the circuit. But let’s face it, no one with an M5 CS or E 73 will likely be using their car for track days. So the real bragging rights will be o-60 and 1/4 mile times. And as it stands, AMG is going to set the bar so high, BMW might just stop trying to compete all together.
