Is Now the Time to Buy a Collector-Grade 560 SEC?

This car is claimed to be among the “best looking, nicest riding, and fastest appreciating” Mercedes Benz coupes out there, according to the Mercedes Source video below. Based on the vid and the photos provided, I can see that this is a well-cared-for car with plenty going for it. And there is no denying that German cars of the ’70s and ’80s have been shooting up in value lately. The 560 SEC was a phenomenal luxury coupe in its day, and perhaps it is cars like this one, in near perfect condition, that will lead the charge in getting people to notice them as collector pieces.

Powered by a 5.5 liter version of Merc’s venerable M117 V8 engine, the 560 SEC is one of those great German cars that was let down by the secondhand market. In many cases, these cars were sold on to second, third, and fourth owners that either didn’t or couldn’t keep them up the way they needed to be.

When you find a gem like this 1989 W126, you need to snap it up and keep it in this kind of condition. There are plenty of ratty ones out there on the market that can be had for under five grand, but the good ones are already valued in the 20s, and the best iterations are over $30,000.

A personal luxury coupe experience like this one offered here may well be worth top-dollar. At $17,500, a car in this kind of condition seems like a bargain to me. For more photos and information about the vehicle, check out Mercedes Source, then let us know what you think.
