Old and Forgotten Mercedes 407D Van Fires Up After 12 Years

It would look perfectly at home abandoned in Chernobyl, or even in a Twisted Metal video game, but this stoic Mercedes 407D van is about to be fired up after sitting for more than a decade (the fact it was being used till 2004 is impressive enough).

If you’re a nerd — like me — and want to sit through all of the theatrics that go into starting an old oil burner like this van, feel free to watch the lengthy video below. If you aren’t to interested in pumping primers, then skip to about the 9:40 mark for when the magic happens.

In my experience, letting a car such as a Mercedes, sit for long periods of time does much more harm than good. Seals dry out, things that don’t even hold lubricant somehow start leaking, and everything goes wrong quicker than an Italian family reunion. It makes you wonder if the engineers who built this 407D engine could possibly imagine a situation like this. How do you go about testing a decade of neglect? Perhaps the impatience of engineers is what shapes warranties.
