‘ONE’ Less: AMG’s Hypercar Goes Up In Flames

The already rare AMG ONE is now rarer. This example caught fire in Germany and is a total loss.
Pour a drink out for the loss of an AMG ONE. This previously green – then briefly orange – hypercar from AMG was spotted up in flames in Germany. According to Motor1, there’s now only 273 of the 275 originals left. This one went up in flames, and another that burned on a trailer two years ago.
To us, it feels like they aren’t even old enough to be suffering this kind of attrition. And since they arent exactly a primary car for a family, it’s not like they are getting a bunch of road mileage either. So what’s causing the issues?

Skeptics may point to the fact that the AMG ONE is a hybrid, and suggest the battery portion is to blame. But in neither case are we provided with any evidence on what sparked the fires. Speculate all you want, but there’s no smoking gun here. Given the amount of testing and engineering into these cars, it seems this is a statistical anomaly.
But in terms of real stats, all we have is smoldering F1 tech. Which is interesting because F1 tech very definitely includes a fire suppression system for the driver compartment and the engine bay. It’s much easier to clean up the mess from an extinguisher than it is to clean up burnt carbon fiber. Also, if you have never had the displeasure of inhaling the odor of a carbon fiber fire, consider yourself lucky. That stuff is awful. It’ll also turn your lungs into rocks.
Car aside, it seems like everyone escaped from the road-side barbecue without injury. Thats always the best possible outcome from a scary situation like fire. But this might mean that existing AMG ONE prices could climb up. Each loss significantly increases the rarity of the ones yet to spark. That could be good news if you’re lucky enough to own one. Or maybe it’s bad news.
