Simple Mods Turn This SL55 Into A 10 Second Runner

By -

It is one of, if not the fastest R230 chassis at the strip, and does it only on boost!

Speed is something that comes quite easily to AMG models, some more than others. While we normally think of the SL55 as a fast ride, it’s never been known to be terribly quick, mainly because of the heft it has to carry around.

Turns out the M113K V8 motor has a surprising amount of untapped potential though. MBWorld user cntrline has been after some quick drag times for a while now, and he’s proven that with no meth injection, no NOS, and a full interior, that low 10’s are very much a reality.

Of course, this SL55 isn’t stock, but the modifications are limited. Mostly, the changes are done to the intake side, with a 90mm throttle body, a custom cold air intake, and in terms of managing all of that air, a modified Kleeman tune is utilized. For drag runs, a set of skinny tires is used up front and drag slicks on older CLK rims are used out back.

With everything staying mostly stock, the car is incredibly consistent. Proof? After 5 runs in a row, there’s less than 0.123 seconds gap between the fastest and slowest run (and check out those 60ft times in TalonTSi97 video!). But the record-setting run is extremely impressive with an ET of 10.146 at 136.46 miles per hour.
