Numbers-matching Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing coupe is going to turn heads at Barrett-Jackson’s Scottsdale auction.

Ask anyone what they consider to be the most beautiful car ever conceived, and chances are, they’ll say the Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing. This iconic machine has been highly coveted since the day it arrived on this earth, and interest in it has only grown in recent years – not to mention values. Thus, we’ll be keeping a close eye on this stunning, restored 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing Coupe when it crosses the block at Barrett-Jackson’s Scottsdale auction next month.

This Gullwing is a bit special for a number of reasons, but it’s also pretty significant for Barrett-Jackson, which is celebrating its 50th year in the business. And what better way to mark that momentous occasion than with a loaded docket starring a rare (one of 855 build in 1955), numbers-matching, restored Gullwing?

“Some of the star collectible vehicles crossing the block at no reserve in Scottsdale come with significant provenance,” said Craig Jackson, chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson. “The 1955 300SL Gullwing coupe is one of those vehicles that we’re truly excited to offer at no reserve. Not only is this Gullwing one of just 1,400 of a total production run, but its pedigree also includes a first-place win at the 1957 Havana Gran Premio National Race. This is an incredible chance to not just own a significant vehicle but help write the next chapter in its evolving legacy.”

This particular Gullwing was originally delivered to Havana, Cuba with its special-ordered Strawberry Red Metallic paint to the Ministry of Police before it was sold and subsequently rallied by professional race car driver Santiago “Chaquito” Gonzales. The car made its way to the U.S. in 1961 and was restored by that third owner in the 1990s, while the fourth owner rebuilt its engine back in 2003.

Looking no worse for wear today, this special Gullwing is still powered by its original M198 3.0-liter SOHC inline-6 engine with Bosch mechanical direct fuel injection and dry sump lubrication, mated to a 4-speed manual transmission. The coupe has a mere 59k miles on the clock today, and features a few nice options including an upgraded beige leather interior with VDO gauges, a wood steering wheel, and non-factory custom-made luggage.
