CLK63 black

Like a fine wine, some things just get better with age. In the automotive world, I’ll use the CLK63 AMG Black as my simile. Back when the CLK63 was around, and then evolved into the CLK63 AMG, it was cast as a bit un-responsive and slightly numb through the steering wheel. Boy, how time has put things into perspective.

The CLK63 AMG Black Series was expensive when it was first sold — almost touching $140,000 — and it’s still expensive now, especially compared to many other high-end Mercedes products. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a well-maintained example for under $75,000. That’s sad for a guy like me. As a CLK55 owner, I could see this as a logical progression through the range. Looks like I may have to wait a while though.

The value is held for one simple reason: the car is almost perfect. Some may not like the lack of edgy styling that’s carried over from other CLK models, some may not even like the fact it has only an automatic gearbox on offer. Experiencing the drive overcomes all of those objections, however. “Analog” is really the best way to describe this car, even though it is bristled with technology throughout. You can’t say that about modern AMG models. It might be why most owners don’t have much interest in selling theirs. In the video below, Matt Farah of The Smoking Tire certainly backs that point up.
