Better Than the AMG GT? YouTubers Test the Mercedes-AMG SL63

By -

If AMG’s GT is a bit too harsh for you, the SL63 AMG makes a strong case as the best roadster to get from Mercedes.

Though the climate in Canada might only have a few workable months to use a roadster, that doesn’t stop the Mercedes SL series from being immensely popular. But with an even more exclusive roadster available in the AMG GT roadster, is the SL63 rendered obsolete? Not so, according to Jakub and Yuri from the Straight Pipes YouTube channel.

With many AMG engines shared between models, you might assume the SL shares the same turbo V8 as the GT, though that’s not true because you get more power. Using the 5.5 liter turbocharged engine, the SL63 enjoys a bit more power and torque, with ratings at 577 and 664 respectively. This makes the SL63 as fast to 60 miles per hour. In many ways that torque number makes the car more approachable to drive, with limits of adhesion a bit softer and more friendly than the GT series.

With that comfort comes a different buyer. Interior technology, including the COMAND system hasn’t been updated to the newer system with the touch pad that’s available in other Mercedes models, but that familiarity might be a good thing for the median age of SL owners. Other comfort and convenience features keep things closer to a cruiser than an all-out track monster, further adding to the appeal of the softer SL.

Pricing of the SL AMGs is on par with the GT series cars, with this particular AMG eclipsing the price range of even an AMG GT R, at least in Canadian markets. swap that turbocharged V8 for the V12 found in the SL65 and you’re clear of the GT by about $100,000. Power from the GT is fast, but the thrust from the V12 is on par with the thrust from a jet engine.
