The Audi Allroad and Volvo XC70 have proven that there is a market for people who want the practicality of all-wheel drive and a decent ride height, but they don’t want an SUV. These beefy wagons provide much of the usability of an actual SUV, without tacking on the excess size and poor fuel economy. With such a ripe market open for the taking, it only makes sense that Mercedes won’t let Audi eat all the cookies. Mercedes has made no secret about its massive push to delve deeper into the SUV market, and a new high-riding wagon is likely to be a key model.

The team over at TopSpeed feels the same way, and they went through the effort of collecting a healthy dose of rumor and speculation into one nice overview, which includes a render of what this new five-door might look like.

Being a German manufacturer, it isn’t too hard to figure out what will likely happen. Just like with Audi basing its Allroad models on the A4 and A6, expect Mercedes to choose the C-Class or E-Class to act as the base. From there, expect some taller suspension, more aggressive tire options, and some reinforced bumpers and lower body work. Dirvetrains should be close to identical of their donor class. Obviously, the Mercedes-Benz 4Matic system will be standard.

So what do you guys think about an off-road estate from Mercedes? Is this something you would be interested in? Be sure to let us know in the forums.
