Mercedes-AMG E63 S Gets Sideways with BMW M5

Is the new 2018 BMW M5 a threat to the Mercedes-AMG E63 S? Find out with this showboating comparo.

Earlier this month, BMW revealed the new 2018 M5, which brings new levels of power and even more high-performance features to the 32-year-old nameplate. The sedan, thanks to its twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8, makes 600 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. That’s an increase of 40 horsepower and 53 lb-ft of torque.

With even more power and four-wheel drive, how does the new M5 stack up against the Mercedes-AMG E63 S? This video from YouCar looks to make answering the question a little harder.

Under the hood of the E63 S lies a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 that cranks out 603 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque, which is more than the M5 can muster. But BMW claims the new M5 can rocket to 60 miles per hour in just 3.2 seconds, while the E63 S takes 3.4 seconds. Both of the cars’ top speeds are extremely similar, as well. The M5 can get to 189 mph while the Mercedes tops out at 186 mph. On paper, then, the cars are nearly identical.

Despite having complex four-wheel-drive systems, both the M5 and E63 S can get very, very sideways, which looks like a lot of fun. While YouCar’s video doesn’t have any commentary or anything that resembles a comparison between the two sedans, it does have a lot of video of the two sedans drifting.

There’s only one question you have to answer after watching the video, and that’s which one you’d have in your garage. The decision was an obvious one for us, as we’d take the E63 S. It looks better, sounds better, and is just as quick. But which one would you have? Let us know in the comments below.
