Question Why do all new E55's come with sub par tires?

Every new E55 I've driven has Conti 2's; I'm amazed that a $90,000 car does not come with better rubber ie; PS2's?

i agree they are better tires out there....

PS2 are top of the food chain, but not the best.

but its probably a contract for certain sizes with different copanies.

what do you guys think about the BFG KDWs?? I've used PS2s in the past and like them, but I've heard good things about the BFGs and thought I may try them next.

For Dry traction KD is the way to go. If you need them for the wet, then get KDS....In fact, I've driven a couple cars and ridden in a couple cars driven hard on the street in KD...extremely grippy tires for the cost but really crappy in rain. On my other car I would only run KD since I'm in socal and seeing how little I drive it....maybe I prefer RA-1s instead. =)

It's not that they're "no good", but there are much better tires that even MB uses as standard equipment and one would think that on a premier AMG car, like an E55, it would come with better standard rubber.

actually one of the major mags did a test of tires.

the good years and Yokohama were better all around than the PS2's...

The used 3 series BmW's to test braking, wet, dry, acceleration.. ect

i was surprised of their findings. Maybe somebody has the article scanned and can post.

I believe I saw that a few months back. I still feel PS's are the best tire and I've tried most of the other top rated tires. I just don't look at performance #'s but how the tire dleivers in everyday driving. I like a smooth quiet riding tire that also performs and suffers the least from overnight flat spotting(something the mags never mention much if at all)...Michelin Pilot's are still the best IMO.

If it's the same article I read, I believe the PS2's came out lower because cost was a factor used during their overall evaluation.

I agree... I just put a set of PS2's on, and the car rides smoother, and has better traction under WOT.... steering wheel doesn't shake first thing in the morning like it did with conti's.....

This is news? They've come with Contis since '03. I forget if it was Car&Driver or Road&Track but one of the mags had a big tire test recently and the Conti performed better than they'd assumed. It was towards the top of the pack. They noted though that while it's capabilities were high, the tire did not feel good at all. I never used mine. I went straight to 19s shod with Bridgestone S-03s and then Pilots after that.

It is news when you first start seriously shopping for a new E55 like I am now. Thanks for the C&D info. sounds right on.

I like my Contis. Other than the AM rough ride, they have performed well in all conditions. I have been to the strip 4 times (with a best 1.77 60'!), 9000 miles and they're still in good shape. Even our last trip to the strip, I was able to muster a 1.85 on a crappy, cold track.

Do I wish they had better straight line? Sure. Are they good for OEM? Yes.

Cornering is decent for 4k lb sedan. I don't track the car, so I can't really comment on that aspect. They handle backroads and on ramps just fine.

I have an '03 E55 with 16,000 miles on original tires and tires still look good. Unfortunately, the ride sucks. I still get a shimmy at 60 and have had the tires balanced and wheels alighned repeadedly to fix the problem. I plan to get the PS-2's in a couple of months. Hopefully, this will solve the shimmy problem. By the way, I found the best deal so far at Sam's Club. They even said the TPMS is not a problem.. Has anyone else ever used Sam's Club?

The Contis aren't bad at all, they are quiet, good in wet and dry, decent wearing, and give a nice ride. They may not be as sticky as PS2's but they are by no means a substandard or poor quality tire. Its not like E55's come with Hanook's or something. I have had my car on both the drag strip and race track with the Contis, they didn't perform like race rubber but they were adequate for a street tire. If anyone buys a new car and doesn't want the Contis I'll be happy to take them off your hands.

I'd bet the Michelins take care of the shimmy...keep us posted.

I put pS2's on my car last month. Cold tire shimmy is completely gone.

Not entirely sure whether the PS2's are grippier than the Conti's. Took the E55 to the strip on Saturday and could not get the 1.8 - 1.9's that I was able to get pretty regularly with the Conti's. Track was very cold, so that could have been the reason why. No question that the PS2 is the sharper handling, more responsive tire of the two. Throwing the car around is much easier with the PS2's. But until I can cut a 1.8 60' time, I can't say that the PS2 is the better tire for the strip.

Thanks and I very happy the shimmy is gone. If I get a new 55 I will ask the dealer to switch the rims and tires from another MB that has Pilot's.

Yes, the Yokohama AVS is excellent but they have VERY VERY short life span!

Overnight? Try a six week trip on a boat to Australia. Half the cars delivered here (at least those whith smart owners) have their Contis replaced under warranty due to flat spots after being chained down on deck for the duration!
PS2 are the only tires I use and have two sets, 18" and 19".
If you buy the best car in the world why try and save on tires?

I like your thinking.

You'd think/wish MB would have thought the same way, especially since the only thing between the entire car and the road is the tires. It seems to me tires would be considered a most important component and only the very best would do.
