Whistling sound from brakes

Hi all,

Has anyone had a whistling sound coming from their brakes? I get this sound every so often.

I have taken it to the dealer twice already. The first time was at 13,000 miles and my service advisor told me their was nothing they could do about it. After giving him an earfull, he decided to replace my brake pads, front and rear. It didn't cost me a thing. He told me if this happens again, to go on about 50 MPH and slam on the brakes to get get the build up off the rotors, as he thinks thats what is causing the whistling sound.

On my second visit, a month later, they stated they could not reproduce the whistling problem and that there was nothing they could do about it.

I've never had this problem with my previous Mercedes (W210).

Anyone else have this same problem? Any suggestions you guys can give me would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks...

This may solve your problem (05 e500 = 211.070):

P-B-42.46/32a JAN04 (211.065/070/076/082/083/265/282/283) Whistling Noise When Depressing the Brake Pedal. The noise is caused by the separation valve coils in the SBC hydraulic control unit (HCU). This whistling noise is conducted via the hydraulic brake lines from the SBC HCU to the brake operating unit (BOU) and then into the interior of the vehicle. The existing steel lines need to be replaced with flex lines to decouple the whistling noise.

Since they already changed out your pads I suggest you also have them look into the following for precaution to circumvent any possible future squeaking/squealing/grinding noises:

P-B-42.46/43 JUN04 Squeaking Noise When Gently Applying Brake (211.026/065/070/076/082/083/265/282/283, 2003 through 2005) Heard at the SBC hydraulic unit, they will perform the automated STAR Diagnosis air release routine to check for air in the system.

P-B-42.10/51e FEB06 Front Brake Squealing/Grinding Noise (171.456;
203.065/076; 209.376/476 up to vehicle production 6/04; 209.375/475; 211.056 up to vehicle production 8/05; 211.070; 215.375/376/378; 219.375; 220.067/170/175/176/178; 230.475) Each time the brakes are applied, the play within the brake caliper guide channel cause the brake pads to move a short distance. This movement is transmitted to the two retaining pins. The rotation is then transmitted to the pressure retaining spring, which can cause it to dislodge from its original position. Modified pressure retaining springs, piston damper, and brake lining will be installed.

Thanks for the information! I am going to relay this information to the dealer and hopefully they'll take care of the problem.
