1991 190 E transmission problems.
 

Hi everyone, does anyone know if this car is known to have serious tranny problems? Im considering buying one for 1500 and it looks great only the lady says it has a transmission problem and she doesnt know what it is. Are transmissions easy to find/replace for this car? Is it worth it?

Easy to find? Yes.
Easy to replace? Maybe.

The 722.4 automatic trans has some known "issues." There were manufacturing updates to some of the internals during production, so it's a good idea to find out when the trans was made.

Being a relatively high pressure unit, as the transmission ages, the front pump seals can fail, with resulting leaks of red/pink dextron fluid. To redo the seals, the trans has to be dropped, although the engine can stay put.

For a shop to "rebuild" a 722.4 trans, with parts and labor it will likely be in the $1.5K range or more, depending on whether the hard metal parts are okay and more if the torque convertor needs to be replaced. One tell tale sign that the torque convertor or rebuild is needed is if there are metal shavings in the transmission pan.

the two biggest issues i ran into with removing and replacing the trans were: the exhaust nuts that are on the manifold and the torq conv plastic pin (screws into the bottom of the trans, to prevent the torq conv from sliding out when installing the trans).

when removing the exhaust, the nuts were just turning, the side of the manifold was supposed to stop them from doing so, it didn't.

the pin wasn't on my trans when i was installing it. i didn't know there was one until i replaced another 190s transmission. when the pin is there, its easy, when its not. . .

i've only done it on 4cyl 190s, the 6cyl version might be a little trickier.
