190E Ball joint replacement

Good morning!

I have a '93 2.6 Sportline. The car has 132K miles on it and I would like to replace my ball joints. Can they be replaced without removing the lower control arm?

I would say "Yes" but then I would have to qualify the answer with the explanation that it would be like having your doctor remove your tonsils via a colonoscopy. Removal and press is much easier and probably only practical with the LCA removed.

There are two means to replace the balljoint. The first is to remove the joint and to press in a new one; the other is to replace the lower control arm that has the ball joint already in place.

The correct tool is a C-clamp style press that can be used with the arm on the car. This eliminates the need for an alignment after replacement if you are happy with your tire wear.

Thanks MTI and Bicylindrico

I appreciate the advice and will follow-through. I have a 20-ton press at the garages I rent which are about 30 miles from where I live. That's why I was trying to save some time. Bicylindrico, might you know where I can purchase a c-clamp press top which you referred?
