1989 190E Ignition Switch question

My ignition switch is stuck and I can't turn the key. Any ideas on how to remove this device while the switch is froze? I know that I have to place the ignition in position one and use a certain shop tool for removal. Any instructions or suggestions will help a lot. Also, does anyone know where I can get that tool or any alternatives to it. Thanks.

I've had that problem with my 240D Before. I had to take out the ignition.

Vibrate it, baby!

I had the same thing happen in my W123. I got the ignition assembly out with lots of luck and hard work, then put the whole assembly on a vibrating-type sander covered with masking tape. It took one guy to work the sander and another to hold the assembly and turn the key. Just hold some pressure to it, vibrate the HELL out of it, and just about when your hands go numb, it'll turn. Remove your battery cable so it doesn't start on you. Not that it happened to me...

how do you remove the ignition switch in a mercedes benz 190e with out the keys

The only alternative is to drill the tumbler and key out of there and replace the whole thing.

I've heard of some people applying some form of vibrator to key and tumbler to get movement in there to enable moving the key. If you do that and get it to position 2, you'd best remove it immediately and then replace it. I'm told that works once in 5 times or so.

The same thing happened to me, first I called A Mercedes dealer to ask how and they said it would cost $1200.00 USD, thank God I was too far away. So I took on the task, I drilled it relentlessly, burned up high speed carbon bits like French fries. FINALLY, it hit me, is the fore plate so hard, could it be broken with a solid hit with a pointed end punch? I sat the punch point at the top of the key slot and hit it, IT BROKE LIKE A PIECE OF STONE!!! The rest is easy to pop it out with a piece of hard wire bent like a U, poke both ends in to the pin holes on each side of the exposed switch behind the plate and pull it out.
