92 190E Stereo Questions

Greetings to all from a new member. 92 190E 2.3 had no volume in stereo. You could barely hear the radio playing and the volume knob cra kled when I turned it.

Decided to remove and replace with Clarion CD deck. THought this wouild be easy but either it isn't or you guys can set me straight.

From the postings I have found here I should see Black wires but I don't. I pulled the radio out and connected the power, antenna, etc. Radio has power. Upon moving on to the speakers I have a grey and grey/red wire (originally attached to a weird little round connector) and a brown and brown/red wire. Also a black one that looks like it might be a universal ground for all the speaker connections?

Can anyone enlighten me on what should be connected where?

Here's what I know.

-6 speakers
-Black wire unplugged from radio separate from all the other wires.
-Brown and brown/red and grey and grey/red were each on separate little round connectors.
-Antenna
-Plug with all the power connectos etc
-Large round plug with pins that I think is CD changer prewire.

Can this work? THanks!!!!

You might want to check out Crutchfield(.com) and use their live chat. I believe they can provide you with an install guide/wiring diagram for the W201.

Does your car have the front/read fader control mounted in the console? My 1988 190E did. In that case the right and left speaker feed wires went to the fader and from the fader to the front and rear speakers.

If you do have a fader control separate from the radio, I'd bet that the brown and brown/red wires are one channel and the grey and grey/red are the other.

The black wire may be a power output wire to trigger a power antenna.

pillo_fight has also given you a good lead. I do believe that Crutchfield used to (and maybe still does) have a wiring harness that would plug into all of your stock wiring and supply output wires to connect to your new head unit.
