Strong exhaust smell

Hi!
I have a 1985 190E (90kw, NON-Kat, M-102 equipped).
She was burning oil, so I took the occasion and had the head gasket replaced, head rebuilt, camshaft replaced, valve seals and many other components renewed/replaced.
Spark and spark cabled are new, fuel pump is new.
I have checked all the holes in trunk, and everything is ok.

The problem is that I have a strong exhaust smell, which invade also the cabin (especially with windows/sunroof opened).
It is really annoying, and I checked and re-checked all the components; muffler is ok.

The smell is like un-burned fuel (as rich mixture), but she doesn't use too much fuel, and CO2 is ok; the car doesn't use any oil either.
I checked EHA valve (and replaced o-rings), but no leaks was present.

I also tried to extend the exhaust, but nothing changed.
It doesn't seem coming from engine bay.

So, problems are basically two:
-exhaust smell is really strong (my friend recognized me from 500 meters)
-it shouldn't enter in the cabin, even stopped at a traffic light.

Any suggestion would be appreciated.

Thank you!

If you really want an answer, put he car on a lift use a sniffer to locate the exhaust leak and then repair the leak or continue to talk about the exhaust smell and do nothing!!

Might be wise to check the egr valve.

Well, I wrote here in order to have tips, not blames.

I head the whole exhaust cheeked by 2 mechanics, and they didn't find any leak, as already said.

Moreover, even with a leak, smell shouldn't be that strong.

Mines is not Kat, I'm not sure I have an EGR or something like that...
Where should I find it?

if you can smell it the leak is in the front of the car. The egr is mounted on the exhaust manifold.

I replaced the whole exhaust line, but nothing changed.

I'm unable to use the car without getting intoxicated.

Any help? :(

overly rich running condition is caused by a problem with your CIS fuel distributor, can you find a replacement at a wrecker?

Thank you, Redwood, for your reply.

I was told by 2 expert mechs, that CIS is ok, but I'm starting to doubt it.
As far as I know, they set just the Co "by hear", listening the idling and so on, saying that the car is old and non-kat, so smell is normal.
I have to say that the engine is running good, smooth and powerful from 1.000 to 5.000rpm; no smoke or high fuel consumption.
I'm also wondering something is wrong with distributor, because at last State inspection, I had a Co2 of 7.1 VS limit of 3.5.... I took for granted that mech did this check, but as a matter of fact, they didn't.

Now, I was also thinking about replace my fuel injectors (I've been told they might be the cause of hard start when warm; fuel accumulator is new), so I will have my CIS fixed, and keep my finger crossed.

Here in Northern Italy, it is almost impossible a scrap yard unit; old Benzs are sent to Africa.
Is it possible to rebuilt my unit, or once defected is better to find a new/used one?

This guy, near my city, overhaul the CIS distributors, but I do not have any feedback concerning the results
