Who is qualified to fix MB's?

HI

I got some questions about repair shops. Are repudiable repair shops that don't specialize in fixing MB qualified to do a pre-purchase inspection on a 190E?

The reason I ask is because I went to a "foreign" repair shop today to inquire about getting a full inspection on a used MB that I am going to purchase and they initially rejected me. At first, they told me that they don't service MB and I should go to a place that specialize in MB. After they realized that I just wanted a pre-purchase inspection, they decided they could probably do it. If they don't know how to fix MB, then how are they gonna know how to inspect it? The reason I wanted to go to this shop is because it is close by and it is highly recommended by a friend who had his VW Beattle serviced at that shop for many years. There is another shop nearby that specialize in MB, but the owner of that one knows the owner of the car I want to purchase. Thus, I don't know if he will be totally honest with me.

General mechanics can tell you generally what's working or not working. I'd prefer to go to a mechanic that knows the weak points of a particular make or model so that they can inspect those areas first. A mechanic who works on VW, Audi or Volvo may be familiar with the Bosch fuel injection system and electronics, so lacking any other source, I might go there.

Did you try an MB dealer? They normally will work on and know quite a bit about MB's!!!!! Sorry, but they are the first place I would go. Lucky for me there is also an overcharging *** of a guy that services MB's locally as well, he used to work in the Service Department of the Local MB dealer that used to be in town. But they sold the place long ago and we have two dealers within 20 miles of my house so no worries there. He is an *** though and I have yet to use him for anything. Anyway, the dealer will most likely look it over for you..... May charge less to gain you as a customer as well.
