Question about the 190E transmission

Question about the 190E transmission

I have a question about the transmission on the 190 model ?

Where there any 5 speed auto transmission made for the 190 models

I have a 4 speeded auto when I’m going in just right speeds, like 70-100/120 mph there is quote a lot off revs in the engine = noise and gasoline consumption

U know when the price here in Sweden is 5,1 $ / gallon U want to cut down on the gasoline expenses

During the production run, all W201's were available with a 5 speed manual transmission. Except for the 16 valve and Evolutions trans (Gertags), the automatics greatly outnumbered the manual in production due to Mercedes typical sales & marketing.

Sorry, misread your post. No, there were no 5-speed AUTO transmissions in the W201. The alternative method of changing the gearing would be to swap differentials with a different final ratio. I believe the "taxi" differentials were the more fuel efficient, albeit lower performance, differentials.

Is there any 5 speed auto gearbox from other models that can be suitable for modifying and fitting on a 190E engine

If you have enough money and time anything is possible. The 190E does not have an electronically controlled tranny! New MB's with the 5 speed auto do! So yes you could do it I suppose, but you would need to fabricate mounts and custom prop shaft since it is probably a longer tranny. Not to mention the electronics, wiring and all the other tidbits. Next you have to make it work with what you already have, which is a car designed to work with a tranny that uses Vacum to do its shifting. It would be sheaper to buy a W202 instead of converting to a 5 speed auto tranny.
