Pricing advice and repair to console panel

I have been reading posts here for a while as I prepare for my purchase and appreciate all the advice shared.

I am currently looking at a 2011 E550 4matic luxury with P2 and parktronic in west central Florida. The car is black on black with burl trim and has 50k miles. Since it is just out of warranty I plan to get an extended warranty for at least up to 100k. I plan to get the car checked by a recommended mechanic, but the carfax is clean and local dealership verified all services have been done to date including new pads and rotors along with transmission/transfer case services at 40k.

The price is down to $32k. Any thoughts?

Overall the car is in very good shape. The only glaring cosmetic issue is some wear in the rubberized coating on the plastic panel that surrounds the comand dial (see pic). I would prefer to replace the panel and am pretty handy, but I can't seem to locate the exact part number or instructions on how to replace such a part to assess the difficulty. Or perhaps there is another solution to touch up the panel. Again, any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

As I understand 32k before taxes.... if so , I think you can get a better deal with lower miles.... if you in no rush of getting a car. My opinion.

Yes price of $32k is before tax. What would be a fair price?

I drive about 8k a year so I am not worried about 50k miles. I should get 6 years before hitting 100k and extended warranty expiration. All the lower miles (25-38k still within warranty) cars around here are asking $36-38k for a e350 or $42k for a E550.

The price is good (my friend got 2010 e550 for 36 before taxes like a week ago)... but miles not really , but if you going to get an extended warranty you should be safe , and they might even replace that worn out panel for you for free.

I was tempted at first by the lower mileage cars, but the 2010s are almost out of factory warranty and the 2011s only had 6 months to a year left before time expired, irregardless of mileage.

So I thought I would try to save on the price and put the difference into a long extended warranty. Been quoted $4k for 6 years/100k total or same price for 6 years/125k total and $300 ded as examples. There are other options, but the car will be covered up to at least 100k.

Private dealer has already said they consider the panel to be normal wear and warranty doesn't cover trim wear.

Price is fair for that year and mileage for a 550. Not sure cost of that part. But it is not hard to change. P2 is nice to have on this car.

Thanks everyone for the input. Next step is the mechanical inspection.

In hopes of identifying the console part, does anyone know where to find instructions on disassembling the armrest console? I assume I have to remove the wood trim surround and the screws would be below that. I have googled but all I find is related to the center console where the head unit and climate controls are.

for the 4matic 550's.

It seems like an e350 is an option for you. In that case I would personally wait for the right car, under warranty. I picked up mine for 32 (2010 with 25k P2 Distronic). Warranty expires in September and picked up the extended warranty last week from MB for 2300 (75k/3yr) for a total of 7 years

My experience with the manufacturers warranty has been easy, Loaner, fixed rattle noise from muffler, Bumper TSB, console cover fixed - All little problems that I did not discover until taking the car home, so a car with warranty even if its a short time still appeals to be for that reason. I'm very picky but I know I'll miss things.

A third party warranty did not appeal to me, but I've heard there are some good companies out there. If you don't need the power get an e350

Thanks for posting all that data. That makes me feel better about the price which appears to average about $30k depending on mileage. Taking into account the P2 and parktronic, it seems fair to me at $32k. I expected the seller to make some profit.

I have been looking at the E350 also, but I prefer the E550 for the leather ventilated seats with driver dynamic seat. I have only found 1 E350 with that option and the seller wants $39k for it with about 35k miles.

You can't beat bumper to bumper, but all extended warranties are backed by some third party I think irregardless of where they are sold.
The specific warranty I mentioned is backed by the Warranty Group. I got a few recommendations from the dealer service rep. He gave me the names of the ones he thought were best to work with. Fidelity was another one.

I found the instructions for removal of the trim near the armrest in another thread about fixing a control knob on an e350. Credit to drsaab for posting it. What a great forum. Thought I would post here also just in case it is easier to find if someone is looking to replace this particular part.

Parts counter at local wants $40 plus tax for the plastic piece. They commented that this is a common wear item, but I didn't see anyone else here post that particular problem.

Every 2011 W212 (with the bi-zenon package) that I have seen has hockey stick DRLs. How come your '2011' has the horizontal DRLs that were introduced for MY2012 ?

Mine is the luxury p2 model, not sport. Note the extra line on the grill and the chrome strip at the bottom of the bumper. The DRL hockey stick was standard on sport models that year. The luxury model only has DRL's with the P2 package. Given that there seems to be more sport models than luxury based on the photos I've browsed, it probably doesn't come up much.

Wow, really? When will the turbo 2012's be dipping into the thirties? Anyone have a guess?
