AutoZeitung M5 vs CLS55

In latest Autozeitung, M5 wins against CLS55.

The M5 wins this comparison not only due to the fact that he's the clearly sportier car, but also because he has a much better chassis and costs 10 000 € less. The daily use capability is great in both cars.

• The AMG-Torque Converter dissapoints while cruising at lower speeds...

• M5 more comfortable in daily use - higher door frames, CLS too small, driver can't see the front of the car, passangers in the back can't see anything...

• CLS has 18" Wheels as standard... (Less accellerating Performance with 19")

• M5 V10 Engine reacts awfully fast ...

• When you drive in the corner, M5 has much more grip

M5 / CLS 55

0-100km/h: 4.4 sec / 4.7 sec
0-200km/h: 13.9 sec / 14.6 sec
80-120km/h: 1.9 sec / 2.6 sec

Slalom (18 m): 66.7 km/h / 64.3 km/h
Laptime around their track: 1.43.2 min / 1.45.0 min

Brakes ( Cold/hot): 34.8 m, 34.9 m / 35.0 m, 35.1 m

Sound in dB:
100km/h: 64 dB / 66dB
130km/h: 69 dB / 71 dB
180km/h: 78 dB / 74 dB

Comfort (front): 138 p / 135 p
Comfort (back): 75 p / 69 p
Gearbox: 96 p / 90 p
Consumption: 54 p / 68 p
Slalom: 84 p / 72 p
Handling: 138 p / 132 p
Traction: 51 p / 41 p

Summary: 3317 p / 3275 p

All of this is incredible! Mercedes is three times better! Just because its Mercedes, just because BMW looks ugly, just because M5s interior is like in old sedan...
I think they made a mistake! It cant be 6sec to 100...

In the end, both the M5 and CLS55 will run about the same money. The M5 in Autobild ran over 100K Euros; certainly no bargain here... These are also the fastest M5 times I have seen from anyone.

The M5 is clearly a very capable car that will perform exceptionally. After all, BMW's reputation as a builder of performance orinented cars was overshadowed by MB's newer engines. Since the M5 used to be the benchmark, BMW simply had to do everything to recapture that.

One can always argue about design, but there is one other area where BMW has lost ground: Crashworthiness. The 5 series only received an average crash rating, something unheard of before. Even a Ford Focus was better than the BMW.

Wolfman, can you please post a link to the new BMW 5 series crashworthiness information that you mentioned? I just searched for 15 minutes and every place I checked stated that the new 5 series has not yet been crash tested, including the NHTSA site.

Thanks Bilal. I had no idea the 5 did so poorly. Yet another reason for me to dislike it!

MB generally stays on top of these things best. Whereas BMW is willing to sacrifice safety for performance, I have yet to see Mercedes do the same.

Auto Motor und Sport came to the opposite conclusion:

They thought the CLS55 was a better everyday driver, and declared it the overall winner. Acceleration was also much closer in this test: 0-100 km/h was a tie, but M5 still pulled up high. Right click and save as...for English translation of CLS55 vs. E60 M5 video

Also note that M5's impressive 8'13" Nurburgring lap time was bested by SL55's lap time of 8'12": click here:

Both are great cars, but having seen the new 545i and CLS in person, I'd prefer the latter...pretty good-looking car. But I'm more of a coupe person than a sedan person!

Thumbs down Ouch!!

This is not good news for such a high-speed vehicle....very unusual, as BMW normally scores high in their crash tests.
